QuarantineMAX 2020 Pickleball Tournament / Challenge
Given the isolation from the pickleball courts that many of us have experienced during the COVID-19 quarantine, I’m really excited to host a virtual pickleball tournament/skills challenge.

It should be a lot of fun — and safe as you will be participating from your own basement or garage!!!
What is QuarantineMAX?
QuarantineMAX is a “virtual” pickleball tournament/skills challenge facilitated by PickleballMAX. The event will be video-streamed on the Zoom video-conferencing platform.
The “tournament” will consist of several pickleball challenges that you will do by yourself (but leveraging video so we can all see and “confirm” results). You will, however, be competing (via Zoom video-conferencing) against others. A champion will be crowned. Bragging rights are at stake.
Click here to see a sampling of some of the drills you may be asked to perform. You can also click here to see videos of previous week’s competitions.
When is the tournament?
TBD
Who can Participate?
This tournament will be limited to the first 12 individuals who sign up and can confirm that they will have their garage or basement setup created and in place before the challenge.
What Garage or Basement Setup is Required?
Competitors will need adequate space (approximately 15 feet extending from the wall) in their basement or garage. You will need a wall, ball (Dura, Franklin, or Onix… your choice!!!), painter’s tape, plastic cup(s), a lidless shoe box, Internet access (for Zoom), and the ability to video yourself (perhaps a tripod) during these challenges.
The garage/basement setup must look like the image below with the following taped lines:
- Line taped on the wall at 36″ high (equal to the net height at the posts)
- NVZ line taped at 7 feet from the wall
- A line that runs parallel to the NVZ line at 5 feet from the wall for those rated 4.0+ or 4 feet from the wall for those rated below 4.0.
- A line that goes from the wall to the NVZ line that splits the left side from the right side.
- A line (just an inch or two in length) that can be marked 12 feet from the wall (5 feet beyond the kitchen line). Note: this line is not pictured in the image.
You will also need a plastic cup on hand that will serve as a target and a lidless shoe box. The lines must be setup well BEFORE the day of the challenge when we initiate the Zoom video conference.

Format
The exact tourney format, along with Zoom video-conferencing instructions will be emailed to participants (using the email you use to register) the day before the challenge.
Cost to Participate
There is no charge to participate.
Final Thoughts
Please make sure you can block off 2 hours on “tournament” day. Please do not sign up unless you have that time available and can meet all the “requirements” outlined above.

So Ken, what kinda of wood did you put up and how thick??? Thank you!
Hi Barbara, I believe Ken used plywood that was 5/8″ thick. Hope that helps.
It kinda looked like Kimberly had a portable wall. If so, can you give some suggestions on how it was made. I literally don’t have an available wall. I’ve been using the back of my ping pong table. Any suggestions would really be appreciated as this looks like fun!!!
Hi Barbara, Many use plywood for a backboard/wall. That seems to work well.
I wanted to watch your virtual tournament is there a link
Hi Matt, I have updated this blog post to include the video stream of the action. You can also find it on the PickleballMAX Facebook Page.
